‘Batman’

Photos will never completely do this piece justice!

Composed in Photoshop from a range of different references after some original sketches for compositional purposes. This piece, measuring a huge (for me) 60cm x 80cm. A multitude of equipment was used. Brushes, Palette knives, airbrushes, stencils, transfers and different paint mediums. Mostly Oils, this gave time to work the paint, glazing thin layers on the underpainting before applying thick, impasto paint marks. The bottom 25% of the painting is completely made up, with that the cape, the horizon and the bats themselves.

Authority, it must capture and keep the audience engaged, for the artist it must show the complex nature of Batmans personality, it must reflect the story that has been laid out before him and claim a response from the viewer, whatever that may be.

The brief. Create a visually striking piece of modern, contemporary art that reflects a range of colour, strong saturation, and with that a range of values. That being said, likeness was a necessity. The viewer must know its, of course, Batman, but also that is is Robert Pattinson! From only 50% of his actual face! Might I add.
