Golden Twilight at Bude: a journey through light, land and a little magic

Can you name me anything that gives you that good feeling than a golden sunset by the sea? I can give you one. Just one teeny thing. Capturing that exact moment, that exact feeling on canvas. So let me introduce you to one of my latest pieces, ‘Golden Twighlight at Bude’ an ode to Bude’s stunning coastline, one filled with memories many of us can relate to and one where you have the chance to bring that bit of Cornwall’s magic into your home, without the chance of a sharp shower.

The moment behind the magic

Golden twilight, that fleeting moment, that brief moment, a mesmerizing pause in the hour between day and night. For me, its the pinnacle of it all, where nature provides some of its best. Its hard not to get caught up in it, in its magic, its allure. How does it happen? How does it make those colours. The golden glow across the waves, that glimmers and glints as the light catches the slightest of waves. The warmth bathing the sand, deep reds, oranges, lapping against your ankles. The pale blue of the sky as it bleeds into a deeper navy overhead. Its that last hint of fading sun that is so inspiring, it beckons to be captured. Standing there on the beach that day, I knew it was a moment worth recording.

The inspiration for Golden Twilight at Bude Beach isn’t just about the scene itself - it is about the feeling. It is a love letter to those moments we manage to catch, the moments where we don’t even realise its there. You may catch the most stunning cloud formation on the way home, the most beautiful sunrise on a chilly morning. I can not count how many times I’ve seen such an explosion of colour in the clouds when in the car. Every brushstroke is an attempt to capture that fellting wonder. I want anyone who looks at this piece to feel as if there were standing right beside me, wrapped up in that warm, golden glow.

The Creative Process

Creating this piece wasn’t just about picking up a brush and going mental on a canvas (although I do enjoy a bit of that). It was methodically choosing the right palette (more of how to create the perfect colours are linked here to my other blog post) to capture that all-important light, this was a careful dance between precision and expression. Sometimes its a dance, sometimes its a fight. The correct hues needed to be picked, the perfect blend of gradients (anyone who knows me, knows I love a gradient!) That glow, that contrast. It needed to be right. Lets just say that I need a new tube of Yellow Ochre.

Balance in a painting is key. I aim to give those details but also simplicity. An act of giving the scene depth without overwhelming. You will often see impasto paint techniques used to create this detail, to combine hues or colours to draw the eye. Creating the glow across the water but also ensuring the heaviness and scale of the clouds required the most care. Its funny how an extra brushmark or palette knife mark can make or break a piece. It can either add or distract trying to achieve that mood, that feeling.
