Guildhall grandeur: My art honoured to appear in ‘Made in Peterborough 2024’

You have most likely already have read, seen or even heard through the socials. My work is to be exhibited alongside many other fantastic local artists in the ‘Made in Peterborough 2024’ art exhibition. It is always an honour to be among other amazing local artists from our city. With that being said, its not just a personal achievement, but its also one that coincides with the brief set out before us - “… to celebrate the people, places and events of our historic and vibrant city.” It is my submission for one of the most iconic features of the city - The Guildhall.

More than meets the eye: Secrets of the Guildhall

The Guildhall is a recognisable building amongst many of the residents and locals of Peterborough, but do many know of its history? My painting, crated from a photo I had taken in mid-December (yup, cold and wet) captures its beauty. I already knew I wanted contrast, bright colours and something different from the usual. So, a wet, dark afternoon it was! The best of the story is actually inside of it.

Built in the early 1600s for the restoration of a king to the country it marked the location of, it is thought, of a market. It also is one of the fewer buildings of that age that still survives. The Almshouse (Tap and Tandoor at the time of writing), the Queens Head and ‘Stoneworks’ pub being a few more.

The upper part part of the building is said to have been a meeting place before a purpose-built town hall was erected. (The link before has some stunning photos provided by the Peterborough Telegraph.) There is also speculation it was once used as a Courthouse, Prison and even a theatre. Although my attempts to verify these claims have proved to be inconclusive. A visit to the Museum and Town Hall may prove to help.

For myself, I do love to dive into the ‘rabbithole’ now and then, finding out random facts or stories, theories or evidence.

If you know anything more, please share it below! Or send me a message, I would love to find out more!

A journey continues: Doodling in the hall to frame on Cathedral Wall

Art has always been a bit of a hobby for me, although it has taken me a great amount of time to rediscover the want to do so. I am very honoured to be able to say this is my second time exhibiting with Peterborough Cathedral, the first exhibition, after lockdown, was in 2023. This time around, capturing something as historically important in its essence as the Peterborough Guildhall through my art is a privilege. For myself, it is kind of a validation of my artistic journey, proof that the stories gone by continue and inspire in a world that is becoming more and more digitalised.
